The Strength of Paul

Today’s blog is by Scott Cundiff, who leads a Bible study class I attend on Sunday mornings. Last Sunday Scott shared a paragraph from his personal journal. The words spoke to me and (with his permission) I share them with you today. His words show the depth Scott puts into his study of God’s word and how he personalizes the messages the Lord has for him. Thanks Scott for sharing a bit of yourself and for being a good role model in our class.

2 Corinthians 11:23-27

Vatican Statue of Apostle Paul
23 Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, beenin prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own people, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked.

In verses 23 -27 Paul, in defense of himself, talks about all the trials he has been through for Christ.  He shares this with the people because he feels he needs to get their attention. I look at this and think, “Wow, would I be willing to go through just a bit of that for Christ?  I would hope so, in fact I will say, “yes I would.” I would like to think I would get angry and defend my Lord with the loudest voice and stand up and carry the message in the most outward way.  However Christ has not asked me to be flogged or go to jail.  He asked me to read His Word and pray.  It seems that I struggle with that.  So my prayer today is that the Lord will give me the strength of Paul in the small things so that I can have the strength of Paul in the big things.
